Can severe allergic reactions cause Low blood pressure?

Hypotension is a state when the patient has a blood pressure lower than 90/60 mmHg. It is usually a symptom of a worse complication, such as certain allergies.

Hypotension is caused only during one allergic reaction and that is anaphylaxis. It is an acute situation which may even cause death if immediate action is not taken. It can occur due to a response to herbs and medicines, foods, bee stings, animal fur and other allergens. Its advancement is swift, but the symptoms are many and easily recognizable. It causes a sudden and drastic drop in blood pressure which can be life-threatening. Apart from hypotension other symptoms include itching, swelling of throat, bloating of tongue, painful spasms in the stomach, feeling of nausea and severe diarrhea.

Elderly people are at a greater risk of death due to other old age-related complications existing in their body. Drugs like penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics have been seen more to cause this allergy, whereas among foods, peanuts, tree nuts and shellfish are the main causes.

Hypotension due to anaphylaxis can occur in people of all ages. However, it is seen that children suffer more from it due to food allergies, whereas adults face it more as a side-effect of medications.
