Calan is a medication used to treat several heart and blood vessel related problems like angina, arrhythmia and high blood pressure or hypertension. This medicine is manufactured by Pfizer Inc although several generic versions are also available. The active ingredient is verapamil hydrochloride. Its chemical name goes as: Benzeneacetonitrile, a-[3-[[2-(3, 4-dimethoxyphenyl) ethyl] methylamino] propyl]-3, 4-dimethoxy-a-(1methylethyl) hydrochloride. Calan belongs to a class of medications called calcium channel blockers. They act on and block the calcium channels found in the heart and blood vessels. This results in a dilation of the blood vessels.

As a result, more blood and oxygen reaches the heart and there is reduction of strain on the heart and blood vessels. Although some calcium channel blockers cause a decrease in heart rate, Calan is a non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker which does not cause reduction in heart rate.
