Can Gout medication help treat High Blood Pressure in Teens? |
Gout, a metabolic disorder caused due to increased Uric Acid levels in the blood which builds up in the joints of the body, resulting in severe pain. Gout is generally treated with a medication that helps lower the uric acid levels in the body. Earlier studies had shown that teen suffering from hypertension tend to show unexplainable increase in uric acid levels, leading researches to imply that medications designed to help reduce uric acid levels might be beneficial in the treatment of the certain hypertensive patients who show mysterious high levels of uric acid. This was a daring and blind theory since scientists were not sure whether increase in uric acid was triggering the increase in blood pressure or whether it was the other way around (high blood pressure increased uric acid levels). A patient study group, all of whom had high levels of uric acid, was treated with allopurinol (gout drug) along with regular blood pressure medications. Patients receiving dosage of both medications showed signs of significant reduction in blood pressure than patients receiving the regular blood pressure treatments. The research has proven to be a breakthrough in the treatment of “hard to control” types of hypertension. Although allopurinol proves effective in the treatment of high blood pressure, it is still dangerous. Medical experts still suggest traditional treatment accompanied by change in lifestyle. |
