How low can you go in Hypotension?

A situation is called hypotension when the blood pressure reading is 90/60 mmHg or below. How low it can go depends on your normal blood pressure and the causes of fall.

Many people can have constant low readings in the stated range without experiencing symptoms. This is their normal blood pressure, and situations can make their pressure drop even lower, where the situation itself decides how much the fall is.

  • Pregnancy causes a drop of the systolic pressure by 5 − 10 points, and 10 − 15 points in diastolic pressure.
  • Low heart rates, heart valve problems, heart attack and heart failures can cause drastic drops.
  • Dehydration, diabetes and endocrine problems can cause considerable falls.
  • Usage of medication such as diuretics, alpha blockers, beta blockers can cause minor to large falls.
  • Blood loss, allergic reactions, severe infections and nutrient deficiencies can cause major falls.
  • Slight drops can occur when a person gets up from sitting position, after a person has eaten something, faulty brain signals or when an individual has been standing for long periods of time.
  • Nervous system damage can cause major drops.

Thus, it is usually not important how low your blood pressure is, but rather the magnitude of the fall, because it could be an indication of the cause of the drop.
