Part of the class of medicines referred to as antihypertensive, methyldopa is an effective drug for the treatment of high blood pressure.

When a person has high blood pressure, it puts extra threads on the overall workload of the heart and the arteries. If this trait continues for a long period of time, the heart and the arteries may not function properly and the blood vessels connected to many of the vital organs may malfunction thus leading to a stroke, heart failure, kidney failure etc. It may also increase the chances of a heart attack. These problems are less likely to occur if a person takes the necessary steps or medications to control blood pressure at an early stage.

Methyldopa controls the impulses on particular nerve paths and thus relaxes the blood vessels. As a result the blood flows through these vessels more easily and with less pressure thereby decreasing blood pressure. 

This medication also has certain side effects and the patient should be aware of the risks associated with them as well. Be sure to let your physician know if you have any allergic reaction or irregularities when using Methyldopa. Patients are also advised to reveal any allergic reactions with any non-medicinal items such as food items or preservatives etc.
