What is PreHypertension?

PreHypertension is a medical term used to describe the level of blood pressure that is above average, yet not enough to be classified as hypertension or high blood pressure. PreHypertension is a sign, alerting you that your blood pressure is rising.

When blood moves along the veins and arteries, a certain force is exerted by the blood on the walls of the arteries. This force is measured as blood pressure. Blood pressure generally fluctuates throughout the day and when that pressure remains at a level higher than average, it is known as hypertension or high blood pressure.

Hypertension or blood pressure that is higher than normal can cause harm to the blood vessels, increasing the risk of several health problem including kidney failure, heart attack and stroke.  Increased levels of blood pressure also cause atherosclerosis (causing the arteries to harden) since the heart is over-worked. These pose a great health risk and in order to avoid such complications certain steps can be taken to bring the blood pressure to a normal state. Hypertension is also known to cause blindness.

Hypertension can cause a lot of complications and sometimes can even be fatal. Although there are steps to controlling blood pressure it is almost impossible to recover from hypertension. It is best to take control of your lifestyle and harness the destructiveness of high blood pressure while it is still in prehypertension stage.
