What is Teenage High Blood pressure?

High Blood pressure has always been commonly regarded as an adult problem, now-a-days even teenagers and younger children can fall victim to High Blood Pressure.

New generation teenagers now, compared to past generation teenagers, exercise less and weigh more resulting in an increase in blood pressure. An authoritative study has shown that the percentage of teenagers with high blood pressure has increased from 1 to 5 percent, between the years 1989 and 2002.

Kaberi Dasgupta, MD, of McGill University Health Center, conducted a research which was published in the journal Circulation. The research indicated that High Blood Pressure is most likely to develop among teenage boys than teenage girls.

The number of young men and adolescent boys (18 - 25) diagnosed with “High Blood Pressure” was increasing every year, hence, inspiring the research. It was concluded in the study that “Systolic Blood pressure” increased by 20 percent per year among boys but had remained constant in girls; a finding that might explain the increase in number of young men diagnosed with high blood pressure.

Some evidence suggests that the use of “Oral contraceptive” may help in the equalization of this difference.
